Why reptiles need hideaways & caves:

1. Stress Reduction: Like many animals, reptiles can experience stress due to various factors such as exposure to too much activity, loud noises, or the presence of predators (or perceived predators). Hiding provides a sense of security and helps reduce stress, contributing to their overall well-being.
2. Predator Avoidance: In the wild, reptiles often face threats from predators. This instinct to hide from danger persists even in the safety of a terrarium. Reptiles may seek out hiding spots when they feel threatened or when there are sudden movements or changes in their environment.
3. Rest and Sleep: Reptiles also need a quiet and safe place to rest and sleep. Hiding spots offer a dark and secluded area where they can relax without being disturbed.
4. Shedding: Many reptiles, such as snakes and lizards, require a safe and secluded spot when they are shedding their skin. Hiding places provide the necessary privacy and security during this vulnerable time, allowing them to complete the shedding process without stress.
5. Thermoregulation: Reptiles are ectothermic (cold-blooded) and rely on the environment to regulate their body temperature. They may hide in cooler or warmer areas of the terrarium to maintain their optimal body temperature. For instance, a reptile may hide under a rock or in a shaded area to cool down or in a warm, secluded spot to increase its body temperature.
