Additional Information:

How often should I cut my dogs nails?

There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ answer for this question. How often you need to cut your dogs nails often depends on a number of different factors.

Dogs who are regularly walked or exercised on various different surfaces rarely need their nails clipped. Dogs that receive a limited amount of exercise, or more senior dogs are more likely to need their nails clipped more frequently.

We recommend monitoring your dogs nail growth and making a decision yourself, but as a rule of thumb, for dogs that need it, every 1-2 weeks a treat. It is always better to remove a small amount of nail more frequently, then it is to wait for them to grow out before trimming.

How do I know when my dogs nails need cutting?

Your dogs nails should not touch the ground, if you can hear them tapping along as they walk, that’s usually a clear sign that they’re ready for their nails to be trimmed.

How do I cut my dogs nails safety?

Dogs nails are supplied with blood so it’s important to find out where this ends (also known as the ‘quick’). Shining your phone torch at the nails should help you find where this is located, there will be a slight colouration change where the blood supply ends.

A properly trimmed nail will be cut just after the blood supply ends and will be cut parallel to the nail itself.

It’s also important to ensure your dog is relaxed before trimming as any sudden movements could cause you to cut the quick. If you or your dog is nervous, it’s always a good idea to ask someone to help hold your dog steady.

What do I do if I cut the quick?

Cutting the quick looks a lot nastier than it is as it may result is significant bleeding. It’s important to try and stop the blood flow and prevent any dirt or bacteria getting into the wound.

If your dogs nail is still bleeding after 30 minutes we’d recommend calling your vets so a trained professional can assess the situation.
