Your questions answered (FAQs)
According to the RSPB you should consider the following elements when deciding where to put your bird feeder:
Traffic – ideally your bird feeder would be away from any human traffic
Surroundings – wild birds will feel safer if they have an unobstructed view of their surroundings and are away from fences and spaces that cats and other predators could launch off.
Shelter – ideally the feeder would be sheltered from extreme conditions, including rain, wind and sun.
Height – your bird feeder should be at least five feet off the ground to prevent other predators or vermin.
One of the best ways to prevent squirrels eating your bird food, is to purchase a squirrel proof bird feeder pole. This is designed to stop squirrels being able to climb up, or land on the feeder itself meaning their only option is to eat the scraps from the floor.
You can also get squirrel proof bird feeders, which typically prevent the food thieves by sensing the change in weight and shutting the doors or access to the food, or by having a cage around the feeder with gaps only small enough for birds.
You could also use a baffle which is a dome shaped device that you can place above or below your feeder to prevent squirrels from climbing up or jumping down onto it.
Generally you should always refill your bird feeder before, or just after it becomes empty. Once wild birds know that your garden has a food source, they’ll quickly return for more. If they regularly return to find an empty feeder, it’s likely they will move onto other gardens and not visit as frequently.
