The best way to ensure you buy a kennel that fits your dog is to measure the height of your dog standing up and its length, then add at least 4 inches to determine the correct size. This will ensure that your dog has enough room to move around comfortably without being too big.
Dogs can thrive in outside kennels, provided their home is dry and protected from the elements. Kennels should always be at least four inches above the ground and be insulated to keep the heat in.
Other ways you can ensure your dog in warm and comfortable in their outside kennel include:
- Shredded paper or cardboard can be placed under your dogs bedding to prevent the ground cold from reaching your dog
- Providing ample bedding, a closed in dog bed and lots of warm dog blankets is a must. It’s also important your dogs beddings aren’t wet or damp or this could cause them to become very cold.
- Keep your dog dry and well groomed, if they are outside all day ice balls or blocks of mud can cause a lot of discomfort when lodged in their paws.
